Community Update

by Travis Walker - Police Chief

I’m happy to announce that since my last Community Update, your Cathedral City Police Department held its inaugural Community Police Academy.  It is with great pride that I can report to you its success!

The twenty-one members from our community who attended the eight-week program, that met for two hours per night, left each session wanting more.  The feedback was extremely positive, and many of those who attended left with a better understanding of the wide variety of services that the police department provides to our community.

The Community Academy provided participants an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the procedures, guidelines, responsibilities, demands, policies and laws that guide the behavior and decisions of our department and officers.  We incorporated a variety of hands-on experiences for the participants which created a chance for us to explain law enforcement techniques in basic, easily understood terms and logic.  The attendees interacted with members from the various divisions within the department, and had several tools and technology demonstrations from our motorcycle officers, K9 unit, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team.  They also experienced the challenges officers face in our new use of force simulator.  This simulator allows you to see how quickly officers must process potential threats and use the appropriate option of force to safely resolve the situation.

We plan on hosting our next Community Academy later this year, and we will post the dates on our website soon!
