Community Update

by Charlie McClendon, City Manager

Strong Non-Profit Sector Helps Make a Strong Community

My experience in local government has led me to the conclusion that three separate sectors must be present and working together to have a strong community.  I use the analogy of a three-legged stool, all must be present and in good condition for the stool to stand up and support any weight.

The first leg is the business community, which fuels the local economy, provides jobs and offers the goods and services people need in their daily lives.  Cathedral City is fortunate to have a strong business community led by the many locally owned businesses in our City.

The second leg is the government sector.  City staff work hard every day to make sure we have a strong, efficient and productive local government providing the government services the community needs.  Police and Fire protection, parks, streets, traffic signals, building and code enforcement all are important in making a community a desirable place for people to live, work and play.

The third sector essential to a community, and the one I want to focus on today, is the non-profit sector.  Non-profits provide services, often to the people most in need of help in a community, with commitment, efficiency and compassion.  Non-profits can often provide services in a more cost effective and efficient manner than either the business or government sectors could provide them.  Cathedral City employees recently demonstrated their commitment to having a strong non-profit sector in our City by donating over $20,000 of their own money during our annual United Way campaign.  I thank them for their generosity.  The City provides annual support to the Boys and Girls Club, the Cathedral City Senior Center and to services for the homeless through the budget each year.  In addition, the people of our community support many other charities, both through contributions and volunteerism throughout our City.  I continue to be impressed with the generosity of the people of our community.  Just last night I attended a fundraiser for a non-profit that was organized and implemented solely by a volunteer from the community.  This spirit of giving helps strengthen our city and the non-profit sector resulting in a better community for all who live here.
