Community Update

by Charles McClendon, City Manager

It’s Election Season in Cathedral City…

Cathedral City will be holding elections for City Council on November 6, 2018.  For the first time Councilmembers will be elected from districts.  Elections will be held this year in Districts 3, 4 and 5.  Elections in Districts 1 and 2 will be held in November 2020.  For a map showing the adopted districts please visit http://www.cathedralcity.gov/home/showdocument?id=6794.  The City Treasurer position will also continue to be elected at-large meaning that voters in all areas of the City will vote on that position in November.

The nomination period for candidates opened this week on July 16 and runs through August 10.  Candidates seeking to run for a Council seat or for City Treasurer should contact Deputy City Clerk, Tracey Martinez at 760-770-0322.  The Cathedral City election will be consolidated with the Statewide General Election to be held on the same date and within the City, the precincts, polling places and election officers of the two elections will be the same.  The county election department of the County of Riverside will canvass the returns of the City Election.  Riverside County will provide information on polling places as we get closer to the date of the election.

City employees are not to be involved in City elections while on duty or while in uniform and may not allocate any City resources to any campaign.   Prohibited activities while on duty or in uniform include, but are not limited to, signing nominating petitions, attending campaign events or fundraisers for Council candidates or performing any campaign work for a candidate.  As City employees, we will work with whichever Councilmembers the voters elect and work to implement the policy decisions made by the Council.

Elections are the very heart of our democracy and I encourage all eligible residents of Cathedral City to register and to cast your vote and make your voice heard.  The deadline for voter registration in California for any election is 11:59:59 p.m. Pacific Time on the 15th calendar day before the election.  You may register to vote by visiting https://registertovote.ca.gov/
