Community Update by Charlie McClendon
City Manager

This week Cathedral City hosted presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders, who held a campaign rally at Big League Dreams Sports Park at Date Palm and Dinah Shore.

The City itself, of course, does not support or oppose any candidate for elected office at any level.  It is up to the people of our community, not the City, to decide who they wish to support.  We do encourage, however, all the people of our community to be involved in their governments at all levels and make their voices heard.

I do want to take this opportunity to thank the many employees of Cathedral City who worked hard, on short notice, to make sure the City was able to present itself in a positive manner before a regional, national and even international audience.

We first began working with the Sanders campaign and the Secret Service on Monday morning, barely 48 hours before the event was scheduled to occur.  Staff considered several locations in Cathedral City and presented them before the campaign staff ultimately decided that Big League Dreams would best meet their needs.

The event placed a heavy load on our Cathedral City police department and Chief Crum was able to draw on his relationships with other law enforcement agencies to get support from Palm Springs, Indio and Riverside County to make sure adequate Police presence was in place to ensure the safety of those in attendance and to ease possible traffic issues outside the venue.  We appreciate the support of these regional partners. I would like to acknowledge the Cathedral City Fire Department that provided support as well.

Chris Parman, our Communications and Events Manager, put out cone zone alerts to the public to advise of possible traffic issues, and when all things are considered, the traffic issues were kept to a minimum.

Cathedral City looked great on television, the mountain views were beautiful, the crowd was enthusiastic and well-behaved.  These are all things we already know about Cathedral City, and now a much broader audience knows.  Thanks to all who helped make the day a success and worked to keep everyone safe.
