Tejano Music Fest Comes to Cathedral City with Great Fanfare

The first annual Tejano Music Fest, presented by Volkswagen of Palm Springs, showcases the music, food, art, and culture of Mexican-Americans whose families originate from south, central, and west Texas.   The festival takes place on Saturday, September 16, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Civic Center Plaza in Downtown Cathedral City, located at 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero.

Tejano music brings together various forms of folk and popular music originating among the Mexican-American populations of Texas.  It has the essence of both English and Spanish lyrics and a mix of pop, country and polka music.  One of the genre’s major cross-over artists was the late “Selena” who was nicknamed, “The Queen of Tejano.”  Additionally, the late Lalo Guerrero, “Father of Chicano Music” and former resident of Cathedral City, was inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame in 1992.

Tejano music has a historical connection with the Coachella Valley.  Back in the 1960s and 1970s, a wave of Tejanos moved to California in order to work in the fields of our local farms.  These families settled in California and have become part of our diverse community bringing with them their music, food, art, and culture.  This festival celebrates them and their cultural gifts to our community.

The festival will also serve to raise funds for those who were victims of Hurricane Harvey that just recently devastated parts of Texas.  The festival will have collection jars where attendees can help victims including many Tejanos who were in the hurricane’s path.  All donations will be given to the American Red Cross.

Besides the music and dance, attendees will have an opportunity to enjoy Tejano-inspired food and beverages, and shop from local merchandisers.  Kids will also have an opportunity to play at the Kid Zone featuring fun-filled, family games.

The Public Arts Commission will also hold a special art exhibit in the Cathedral City Cultural Arts Museum adjacent to the festival entitled, “Latino Cultural Arts.”  This exhibit showcases local Latino artists during the festival and for a limited time on weekends.  Free admission.

The festival has already sold out its 50 reserved tables for those who wanted a guaranteed seat between dances; however, reserved tables are not necessary as the music festival is a free event being offered by the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission whose mission is to advance performing and visual art in the community.  There will also be a limited number of picnic tables and high top tables available on a first-come, first-available basis.

The festival includes musical headliners “Mike G y Los Realez” band from Lubbock, Texas, and La Justicia as well as Katie Lee Ledezma y Su Conjunto, Ambixion, Ruben Loredo y Su Conjunto, and Santiago Garza y La Naturaleza.  The event will be emceed by Tejano Radio Network’s DJ Jammin J (Jesse Spindola).   Admission and parking are free.

Attendees can also receive a special hotel discount from the event’s host hotel, V Palm Springs, by going to the festival website, www.TejanoMusicFest.com.

Major sponsors include Volkswagen of Palm Springs, V Palm Springs, Mother Earth’s Farmacy, Conjunto Crazy Promotions, Cashback Loans, and the Cathedral City Public Arts Commission.
