A Public Hearing and “City Hall at Your Corner” Focused on Electoral Districts – This Week

The City Council will hold two events this week to receive your input on the Electoral Districts Draft Maps. Recently, the Council has selected seven draft maps for further consideration.
The seven include three draft maps produced by National Demographics Corporation, three draft maps created by residents and one draft map submitted by Mayor Henry. You may review these maps at http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/electoral-districts.

The City Council asks the public to provide additional input about the seven selected draft maps. A Public Hearing on Electoral Districts is scheduled for this Wednesday, August 9, 2017, City Council Meeting, Regular Session, commencing at 6:30 p.m., City Hall, Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero. It is the goal of the Council to reduce the number of potential draft maps from seven to three at this week’s council meeting.

You may also provide input on selected draft maps in a more casual manner at this week’s “City Hall at Your Corner” scheduled for Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Cathedral City Public Library, Community Meeting Room, 33520 Date Palm Drive. Councilmembers John Aguilar and Mark Carnevale will host this week’s meeting.

Of course, you can always submit your input through email to any of the Council Members. City Council emails are available at http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/mayor-council.

Background:
On March 8, 2017, the City Council approved a Resolution initiating procedures for establishing and implementing “by-district” elections for City Council Members starting in November 2018, which is consistent with Elections Code section 10010. The City Council also approved a Resolution specifying the criteria to guide the establishment of electoral districts. These criteria requires the districts to be roughly equal in population, and drawn in a manner that does not result in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen to vote on account of race or color.
