CONE ZONE UPDATE: CATHEDRAL CANYON DRIVE AT THE WASH TO REOPEN THURSDAY MORNING

CATHEDRAL CITY, CA [March 18, 2019] Cathedral Canyon Drive at Whitewater River Wash has been closed since the Valentine’s Day Flood as record rainfall turned the ordinarily dry riverbed into a raging river.  Consequently, the flood severely damaged Cathedral Canyon Drive through the wash.  Damage was estimated at $1.2 million.  Crews have been working on repairing not only the road but also several underground electrical and fiber optic cables.

Although the repairs will take a little longer than forecasted last week, Cathedral Canyon Drive at the wash will reopen on Thursday, March 21, 2019 during the morning hours. The road will be reduced to one lane in each direction through the wash.  Cathedral City plans to begin construction on a new, four-lane bridge over the wash in December 2019.  The bridge will also include sidewalks and bike lanes in both directions.
