Enhanced Enforcement for Illegal Fireworks in Cathedral City Starts Saturday

Today at noon, local charities began selling the Safe and Sane Fireworks at various locations throughout Cathedral City.  These are permitted fireworks that do NOT go up in the air and do not explode.  Each package is labeled as “Safe and Sane” by the California State Fire Marshal.

Any firework that is not labeled “Safe and Sane” is considered illegal.  The City Council just instituted a $1,000 fine for anyone caught in possession or firing off illegal fireworks.  Property owners will also be fined $1,000 for knowing and allowing illegal fireworks on their property.  A second offense will cost you $3,000, and a third and additional offenses go up $1,000 more ($4,000, $5,000, etc).

Four special enforcement patrols will be dispatched throughout the City starting on June 30 through July 4th from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am issuing citations to those who disobey the law and put the community at risk with illegal fireworks.  Remember, you will be held responsible for any fire and its damage or injury caused by the use of illegal fireworks.
