New Statue of the Late Lalo Guerrero Unveiled in Downtown’s Town Square Park

As part of the Cathedral City’s 35th Anniversary Celebration, the Cathedral City Public Art Commission unveiled the Lalo Guerrero Sculpture in honor and tribute of the late iconic artist.

Eduardo “Lalo” Guerrero (December 24, 1916 – March 17, 2005) was a Mexican-American guitarist, singer and farm labor activist best known for his strong influence on today’s Latin musical artists. Lalo was a musician, writer and performer for more than six decades, gaining worldwide recognition as the “Father of Chicano Music”.

The Cathedral City Public Art Commission was privileged to have the legendary Chicano artist, muralist, designer and sculptor, Ignacio Gomez design and sculpt a six-foot bronze statue of the late Lalo Guerrero. The Chicano Artist is known for Chicano art inspired paintings, as well as his sculptors of César E. Chavez Memorial for the Cities of San Fernando and Riverside, California. Gomez states through his art he strives to create Latino Pride, and hope for future generation through “powerful images of Latinos on a quest for higher education, becoming professionals, and accomplishing great things”.

The Cathedral City Public Art’s Commission is proud to showcase both Chicano Artists in celebration of Cathedral City’s 35th Anniversary celebrating the Hispanic diversity amongst our city.
