Nine Applicants Seek an Appointment to the City Council of Cathedral City

As a result of Councilmember Stan Henry becoming Mayor of Cathedral City in the November General Election, his councilmember seat is now vacant with two years remaining.

On December 10, 2014, the City Council requested community input and discussed the options available to them to fill the seat during the study session of the council meeting.

After hearing public comments and discussing the alternatives, Council directed staff to prepare an open application and interview process for individuals interested in filling the vacancy. The application and interview process was posted on the City website and Facebook page; articles informing the public of the process ran in the local news media and a paid notice was published in The Desert Sun on December 13 and 14. The application deadline was set for noon on December 16, 2014.

Interested individuals were asked to submit a letter of interest and a resume. The only eligibility requirement for appointment is that a candidate must be registered to vote in Cathedral City.

Applications were received from the following people:

  1. John Aguilar
  2. Denise Rodriguez Bowman
  3. Sergio Espericueta
  4. Kevin C. Koch
  5. Paul Marchand
  6. Arianna Menon
  7. Ronald Stewart
  8. Stephen G. Vericker
  9. Carol Zale

To view the applications, go to: http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/meetings-events/city-council-meetings  Click on the December 17, 2015, City Council Special Meeting, and then, “Meeting Details”.

Tomorrow, applicants will be asked to assemble in the Council Chambers at the start of the meeting scheduled for 2:00 p.m. They will each draw a number to determine the order in which they will be interviewed. Applicants will then be asked to wait outside the Council Chambers until their turn to interview, which will be held in an open public meeting venue.

After all the applicants have been interviewed, the Council will discuss the applicants and vote whether to make an appointment. If a candidate is chosen, the individual will be sworn-in immediately.
