Issue 449
The building permitting and inspection process in Cathedral City is one of the City’s core service areas and works to ensure public health and safety for residents, businesses, and visitors. Over the course of May, we celebrated building safety month, an international campaign to raise awareness about building safety. This is an opportunity to reflect on the many ways the City’s building safety professionals and our codes and regulations serve to protect the community.

The building safety profession covers every aspect of the life of a building, from planning and construction to use, operation and maintenance. Building safety professionals assist design professionals, contractors, building owners and the public to understand how to design, construct, operate and occupy buildings in conformance with the International Codes and technical standards.

All communities need building codes to protect their residents from hazards like fires, weather-related events, and structural collapse. More routinely, building codes ensure that buildings are constructed to withstand the stress of everyday use.

As with other cities across the state, Cathedral City adopted the 2022 California Building Standards Code, effective January 1, 2023, a code that covers multiple disciplines, including general materials and methods of building construction, fire, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and energy and sustainability. California cities are required to adopt the latest version of the California Building Standards Code every three years to ensure the City’s code is incorporating amendments and changes to model codes.

The City’s professional building safety staff use these codes to review building permits for new construction and building alterations and to conduct inspections during the construction process. City staff also perform inspections as part of the business licensing process and for special events, which further ensures building safety within the Cathedral City community.

The building permitting and inspection process is a key part of the City’s commitment to serve the community with commitment, pride, and excellence and the team of professionals – the City’s building official, plans examiner, inspector, permit technicians, and support staff – are an integral part of the Cathedral City organization and community. Reflecting on the 2024 Building Safety Month, I thank each of them for their contributions to making Cathedral City a vibrant and safe community.
