Issue 451
Dear Residents,

As we navigate this year’s budget process, I wanted to update you.

Safe neighborhoods are the foundation of success for our residents, business community, and the visitors we receive from all over the Valley and beyond.

But as many may know, like many Cities in California, Cathedral City is grappling with increased property crime – a five-year high – with over 825 reported burglaries and thefts, including more than 235 car thefts, and roads that are deteriorating more quickly that we can repair them - even before the most recent storms. These issues can also impact our 911 response times – where approximately 77% of calls to Cathedral City Fire Department have been related to medical emergencies.

Unfortunately, in these challenging times, previous State actions have caused the loss of over $30 million from Cathedral City in the last five years alone - we can’t count on their support.

These takeaways amid increased safety and basic repair and maintenance needs will impact our ability to provide basic City services including police, fire and 9-1-1 emergency medical services, street repairs, and addressing homelessness in our parks and public spaces, for our residents at the levels necessary to maintain our quality of life.

Without funds that are legally protected from State takeaways- the City is facing budget deficits that threaten local services, now, and in the future.

That’s why it is so important to continue to hear from you, the community we serve.

As part of our budget process, residents will soon receive a postcard asking everyone in our community to take a moment to participate in a survey on service priorities in Cathedral City. We hope we can count on your participation!

Your critical feedback will be used when determining where to prioritize budget needs and service cuts as required.

If you do not receive the postcard, need more information, or wish to take the survey now, please visit us at www.cathedralcity.gov/JoinTheConversation.

We appreciate the input received from the community to date and look forward to keeping you informed. Thank you for your commitment to our community!
