More ATP Grant Projects in the Queue
In my last update, I provided you with information on the progress of the city’s “ATP Cycle 5 – Cathedral City Downtown Connectors Project.” As you may recall that project consisted of 3 segments as follows:
- The East Palm Canyon Drive Bicycle Lanes Segment.
- The Cathedral Canyon Drive Sidewalk and Multiuse Trail Segment.
- The Date Palm Drive Expansion South of Perez Road to East Palm Canyon Drive Segment.
This project is now 12 days away from overall completion and will provide additional bike lanes and pedestrian facilities toward the city’s overall Active Transportation Program (ATP) goals. Cumulatively, this one (three-segment) project added approximately 1.6 miles of new sidewalk and 3.6 miles of new bicycle lanes to the city’s inventory.
For new readers of the Community Update, the city’s ATP is our strategic framework to enhance and encourage mobility options for residents that focus on non-motorized modes of transportation such as walking and biking. Both can also be used to access public transportation if needed. The city’s ATP aims to promote healthier lifestyles, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality by encouraging more sustainable transportation choices.
As the city continues to work on adding dedicated and/or shared bicycle lanes on key streets to ensure safer routes for cyclists, there are two more ATP projects currently in the design phases that will expand the city’s bicycle infrastructure. These projects are:
- The Perez Road Class IV Separated Bikeways project.
- This project is located on Perez Road between Cathedral Canyon Drive and Date Palm Drive (location shown below).
-
- This project will provide 7-foot-wide protected bicycle lanes on the north and south sides of Perez for the full one-half mile distance with a physical buffer separating the bicycle lane from vehicular traffic as shown below in blue.
-
- The cost of this project is $680,000. The city engineering team secured a SB 821 Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities grant for 75% of the cost in the amount of $510,000.
- This project is scheduled to be designed and completed by June 2026.
- The Whispering Palms Trail Class II Bike Routes project.
- This project is located on Whispering Palms Trail between 30th Avenue and Dinah Shore Drive (location shown below).
-
- This project will provide a shared roadway (vehicles and bicycles) corridor for both north and south traffic on Whispering Palms Trail for the full 2-mile distance with all the appropriate pavement markings, striping, wayfinding signage and traffic calming equipment (typical signage and equipment shown below).
-
- The cost of this project is $1,062,000. The city engineering team also secured a SB 821 Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities grant for 65% of the cost in the amount of $690,000 having leveraged the city’s already planned roadway repaving project work on portions of Whispering Palms Trail.
- This project is scheduled to be designed and completed by June 2025
The integration of the two projects will enhance our city's infrastructure by adding an additional 5 miles of designated bicycle lanes and routes. These projects are part of the city’s broader commitment to improving alternative transportation options for both residents and visitors.
Our public works staff are diligently working towards achieving more ATP accomplishments, which are essential for promoting sustainable and efficient mobility within the city. By expanding our bicycle network, we are encouraging cycling as a viable mode of transportation, thus contributing to reducing traffic congestion and improving the environment. This proactive approach not only supports the health and well-being of our community but also aligns with the city’s goals of fostering a more connected and accessible urban environment.
Safety is paramount during your holiday travel, regardless of the mode of transportation. Whether driving, cycling or walking, it is essential to follow safety protocols, stay alert, and remain aware of your surroundings. Best wishes for a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
