Issue 479
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.

The end of the year offers an opportunity to look back on the past year and recall everything that makes Cathedral City such a special place to live.

In January 2024 the city welcomed the new year by once again serving as a host and sponsor for the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Our own Mary Pickford theater hosted a full calendar of film screenings during the festival which brought thousands of people to our city. Toward the end of the month the City Council met in their annual strategic planning session and updated the five-year strategic plan for the city. An organization can only be successful when everyone knows what goals and objectives we are working toward and the Council made sure that could happen by adopting the updated strategic plan.

In February we welcomed the annual Taste of Jalisco festival which saw strong attendance despite cool temperatures. Residents and visitors alike enjoyed carnival rides, food vendors, tequila tasting and top entertainment during the three-day event. Later in February we kicked off the first season of Tastes and Sounds of Cathedral City which ran for eight weeks and featured local and regional bands and food vendors from Cathedral City and surrounding communities. Watch for the return of this series Feb. 11 – April 8, 2025.

In March volunteers touched up the Rainbow Crosswalk in downtown Cathedral City and a week later the city hosted the annual LGBT+ Days event. The bed race on Sunday morning was a highlight of the event attended by a huge crowds of spectators on Avenida Lalo Guerrero.

The groundbreaking for the new Dream Homes park, subsequently named Esperanza Park, was held in April. This $11 million park was mostly funded through a California State Parks grant. This park will serve all residents of Cathedral City, but particularly fills a need in the Dream Homes neighborhood which was previously underserved in terms of public parks. We also held an appreciation dinner to honor our volunteer Commission and Committee members. Their work provides important input to the City Council on key policy issues throughout the year.

In May the city renamed streets adjacent to Cathedral City High School and Mt. San Jacinto High School in honor of top performing students from those schools. The city continues to support the Palm Springs Unified School District as they bring educational excellence to our community.

Some cities slow down during June, July and August, but most of us here in Cathedral City are year-round residents so the city keeps moving during the hot summer months. Roads were a focus over the summer as the streets in the Horizon area, which were damaged by Tropical Storm Hilary and the subsequent clean up were repaved and/or slurried to restore the pavement quality. The city staff also worked with CalTrans to obtain disaster relief funding for an upcoming project on Date Palm Drive from I-10 to 30th to repair that damaged and important roadway.

In July the City Council, after months of study and public input, including a report from the Resident Study Committee of Cathedral City residents, acted to refer a tax question to the voters (Measure W) which was ultimately approved by the voters in November. 74% of Cathedral City voters said yes to improved and more efficient emergency medical service, more funding for paving neighborhood streets and yes to joining the Desert Recreation District so that Cathedral City residents can enjoy the broad array of parks and recreation opportunities offered by the DRD.

In September some important promotions were announced in the Police department as Rick Sanchez was promoted to Deputy Police Chief and Andy Diaz and Nate Hanley were promoted to Police Commander. Additionally, Erick Becerril came on board as the new Economic Development Manager.

October saw the return of special event season as the amphitheater hosted the Battle in the Desert public safety boxing event and the annual Halloween Spooktacular event in downtown was held to the delight of families from across the city and beyond.

In November Nancy Ross in District 2 and Rita Lamb in District 1 were reelected to new four-years terms on the City Council and voter approved Measure W. The 10th annual Cathedral City International Hot Air Balloon festival was held and saw record setting crowds of 35,000 attendees from Nov. 22-24, 2024. A highlight of the event was a concert at the amphitheater featuring LeAnn Rimes. A crowd of over 2,000 packed the amphitheater for the concert which included an appearance by Emily West as well.

Finally, in December Nancy Ross was sworn in as Mayor for the next year and Raymond Gregory took the oath as Mayor Pro Tem. The Council awarded a contract for street paving projects on Shifting Sands, Sky Blue Water Trail and 33rd Avenue and also on Avenida Quintana and Ventura Drive. Those paving projects will be completed by March 2025.
Once again, I wish you all the very best this holiday season. Whatever you celebrate at this time of year I hope you are able to be with the people who mean the most to you.
