School is back in session, and with it comes a familiar shift in the rhythm of our streets. The Cathedral City Police Department is committed to making this another safe school year, and that effort starts with every driver in our community.

Expect More Traffic — and More Kids
|
|
School zones see a significant increase in congestion during arrival and dismissal windows. That means slower speeds, sudden stops, and pedestrians who may not always be looking before they step off the curb. Crossing guards, parents, teachers, and students are all sharing the road with you. Please give them your full attention.
|
Five Things Every Driver Can Do
|
- Obey posted school zone speed limits. Under California law, the limit drops to 25 mph in a school zone when children are present — and lower in some marked areas. Watch for the signs and slow down before you reach them.
- Follow every direction from a crossing guard. Their instructions carry the same weight as a traffic signal. Come to a complete stop and wait until they have cleared the crosswalk.
- Put the phone down. Texting, scrolling, or holding a phone behind the wheel is illegal in California and one of the leading causes of preventable collisions. A few seconds of distraction is all it takes.
- Leave a little earlier. Rushing is what turns a normal commute into a risky one. Building in an extra ten minutes removes the pressure to make up time.
- Use the designated drop-off and pick-up areas. Double-parking, blocking crosswalks, or making U-turns near a campus puts children directly in harm’s way.

Extra Patrols in School Areas
|
|
Officers will be conducting additional patrols in and around school zones throughout the year. Our goal is education and prevention first — but speeding and distracted driving near a campus will be enforced.

Walking or biking to school? Review the route with your child, practice using crosswalks, and remind them to make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street. Bright clothing and a helmet go a long way.
