Esperanza Park Opens to Incredible Community Response

Dear Cathedral City Residents,

The City of Cathedral City officially opened Esperanza Park Thursday morning (May 22, 2025), and the community response was nothing short of incredible. Watching families, children, and residents of all ages gather to celebrate this long-awaited 7.5-acre park in the Dream Homes neighborhood was truly moving. A 4th grade class from Agua Caliente Elementary was among the enthusiastic attendees, adding to the joy of this historic day.

The ribbon cutting ceremony drew a remarkable crowd of community members who have waited years for this moment. Public Works Director John Corella served as master of ceremonies, with remarks from Councilmember Ernesto Gutierrez, Mayor Nancy Ross, and representatives from our state and regional partners including the Desert Recreation District, California State Parks, CVAG, and offices of Assemblymember Greg Wallis, Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh, and Representative Raul Ruiz.

The $11 million park, primarily funded through an $8.5 million California State Parks Statewide Park Program grant with the City contributing the remaining funds, features children's play areas, shaded picnic spaces, fitness equipment, sports fields, basketball courts, dog parks, and connections to the CV Link. The facility also incorporates drought-tolerant landscaping and cultural elements celebrating our community's heritage.

Special recognition goes to the dedicated city staff who made this vision a reality: Andres Perez (Esperanza Park Project Manager), Shawn Maddox (Development Project Manager - Engineering), and Armando Baldizzone (City Engineer), along with City Manager Charlie McClendon and Assistant City Manager Anne Ambrose.

Seeing the joy on residents' faces as they explored their new park was a powerful reminder of why projects like this matter so much to our community. Esperanza—hope—has truly arrived in the Dream Homes neighborhood.
