Firework Safety & Awareness

A Note From the Chief

As we approach the Fourth of July, I want to remind everyone that all fireworks are illegal in Cathedral City. This isn’t just a policy - it’s a matter of public safety.

Each year, fireworks lead to preventable injuries, structure fires, and traumatic incidents for both people and pets. Cathedral City Fire & EMS is committed to protecting our residents, and we need your help to keep our neighborhoods safe.

Let’s celebrate responsibly, protect our homes, and avoid tragedy. - Michael Contreras

FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL IN CATHEDRAL CITY
There are no “safe and sane” fireworks allowed.
Possession, use, or sale of fireworks - of any kind - is prohibited. Violations include:
  • Fine of $1,000 for the first offense.
  • Fine of $2,000 for the second offense.
  • Confiscation of fireworks.
  • Potential criminal charges in severe cases.
If you witness fireworks being used, report it immediately to Cathedral City Police at (760) 770-0300.

Dangers of Fireworks
Fireworks may seem fun, but they come with serious risks:
  • House & brush fires.
  • Severe burns and injuries to hands, face, and eyes.
  • Hearing damage.
  • Trauma to pets and veterans with PTSD.
  • False sense of safety among children.
Last year alone, fireworks caused over 12,000 injuries nationwide, many involving children under 15.

Real Consequences: Cathedral City House Fire
Recently, fireworks ignited a destructive fire in our city:
  • A home and six vehicles were destroyed.
  • Nearby homes also sustained fire damage.
  • Thankfully, no injuries occurred - but it could have been much worse.
This incident is a sobering reminder of how fast things can escalate in our dry, windy desert environment.

Protect Your Pets
Pets often experience high anxiety due to loud fireworks. Help keep them calm:
  • Keep pets indoors and away from windows.
  • Play calming music or use a white noise machine.
  • Avoid leaving them alone during peak firework hours.

What You Can Do Instead
Cathedral City encourages safe, community-centered celebrations:
  • Attend official firework displays hosted in neighboring cities where permitted.
  • Host BBQs, games, or movie nights at home.
  • Use glow sticks or light shows as fun, safe alternatives.
Stay Safe, Speak Up
Together, we can reduce the risk of fire, injury, and chaos in our community.
Report fireworks:
  • Call the Cathedral City Police non-emergency number at (760) 770-0300.
  • If it is an emergency, call 9-1-1.
Let’s work together to keep Cathedral City safe this summer.
