A Message from City Manager Charlie McClendon

Our Commitment to Community: Sanctuary Laws and Your Rights

Recent events in our community have raised important questions about our city's role regarding federal immigration enforcement and sanctuary laws. I want to take this opportunity to clarify our position and provide you with valuable resources.

As many of you know, Cathedral City operates under California's sanctuary state laws, particularly SB 54 (the California Values Act). These laws require that we do not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement activities. This means the Cathedral City Police Department does not coordinate with, assist in, or receive advance notice of ICE operations. Our officers focus exclusively on local public safety and do not ask about immigration status when providing services to residents.

It's important to understand that while sanctuary laws prevent local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, they do not grant local authorities the power to interfere with or obstruct federal operations. Immigration enforcement falls under exclusive federal jurisdiction.

Our sanctuary policies exist to build trust within our community. When all residents feel safe accessing city services, reporting crimes, and seeking help from police, our entire community becomes safer and stronger.

It's important for all residents to understand their rights. The California Attorney General's Office provides comprehensive guidance on immigrant rights under both state and federal law. I encourage everyone to visit their website and familiarize themselves with these protections.

Key points to remember:
  • Cathedral City is committed to being a welcoming and inclusive community
  • All residents can access city services regardless of immigration status
  • CCPD will respond to calls for help from everyone in our community
  • You have constitutional rights during any interaction with law enforcement
Resources Available to Our Community:
  • California Attorney General's guidance on immigrant rights: www.oag.ca.gov
  • Local rapid response for immigration services: Text 951-388-2008
  • Free Citizenship Classes at Cathedral City Senior Center: Tuesdays, 10 AM - 12 PM at 37171 W. Buddy Rogers Ave. TODEC provides free assistance with applications and fee exemptions for qualifying individuals. Please call 760-321-1548 or visit www.thecathedralcenter.org.
Our community's strength comes from how we support one another, especially during challenging times. I encourage residents to stay informed, know their rights, take advantage of available resources, and remember that Cathedral City remains committed to being a safe and welcoming place for all who call it home.

Together, we build a stronger Cathedral City.
