Bringing New Recreation Opportunities to Cathedral City – and Staying Cool This Summer
With the resounding support of Cathedral City residents for Measure W, we've been hard at work implementing key priorities that will enhance the quality of life for our community. Two important goals are now underway: officially joining the Desert Recreation District (DRD) and beginning the site selection process for a future community center.
On July 9, 2025, the City Council will review a proposed professional services agreement with a site selection consultant. This step is essential in identifying the best possible location for a community center that will serve residents of all ages for generations to come.
As we build toward the future, the Desert Recreation District (DRD) is already creating new programs and services for Cathedral City. DRD is currently seeking contract instructors to lead a variety of classes and recreational programs. If you have a special skill, talent, or passion you'd like to share with others—whether it's fitness, dance, art, adult or youth enrichment—now is the time to get involved. To learn more or apply, please contact Cynthia Morquecho at cmorquecho@drd.us.com.
While we plan ahead, it's important to stay safe and cool during our sizzling summer months. A great way to beat the heat is to take advantage of DRD's swim program at Cathedral City High School, offering swimming lessons and open swim opportunities for the whole family. Scholarship opportunities are available if cost is a barrier.
Keeping with the water theme, DRD has some special events planned at the pool and beyond. Mark your calendars for July 18 from 5:00-10:00pm for the free Splash Bash at Dennis Keat Soccer Park. This event will include water slides, a splash zone, games, food, music and a movie. On July 19, head to the Cathedral City High School from 7:30-10:30pm to float and enjoy a free screening of Sonic 3 from the comfort of the water. On July 16 and July 25, the DRD will be hosting the 1st Annual Swim Meets at the Cathedral City High School Pool. Adults will compete on July 16 from 8:00am – 1:00pm and youth on July 25, from 8:00am – 12:00pm. There is a $25.00 registration fee to participate in the swim meet. For more information about any of these programs and events, go to www.myrecreationdistrict.com.
Cathedral City is moving forward with bold steps to enhance recreation and community well-being—and together, we're making it happen. Stay cool, stay involved, and thank you for helping us build a stronger, more connected Cathedral City.
