Speed Limits Are Changing Starting July 25, 2025
Attention, Cathedral City drivers! Changes are coming to some of our city’s speed limits, effective July 25, 2025. Why the change? Our city recently completed its 2025 Engineering and Traffic Survey, a key process that ensures our streets are safe, up-to-date, and compliant with state law.
🛣️ What’s This All About?
Every few years, cities across California are required to conduct a comprehensive review of speed limits on arterial, major, and collector streets. This is done through an Engineering and Traffic Survey, which must be led by a California-registered Traffic Engineer. The goal? Make sure speed limits reflect current road conditions, traffic patterns, and public safety needs.
Our last citywide survey was completed in 2019, extended in 2024, and now updated in 2025 in response to recent infrastructure changes and evolving traffic conditions.
In 2021, Assembly Bill 43 (AB 43) was signed into law, expanding local authority over speed limits—especially in areas with high pedestrian activity or special land uses. AB 43 also allows surveys like ours to remain valid for up to 14 years (with proper certification). Thanks to this law, Cathedral City had greater flexibility in evaluating and adjusting our speed limits for better community safety.
- In November 2024, the City Council approved a contract for $45,012 with our traffic engineering consultant to conduct the 2025 study.
- A draft survey was submitted in March 2025 and presented during a public study session on May 14, 2025.
- The Council requested a few areas be reevaluated under AB 43 to see if speed reductions could be justified.
- On May 28, 2025, the City Council held a first reading of the ordinance with proposed speed limit changes.
- The ordinance was officially adopted on June 25, 2025—with the changes going into effect July 25, 2025.

City crews are already preparing to install updated signage across these roads. The new speed limits will go into effect on July 25, 2025, so keep an eye out for the fresh signs!
🚙 Drive Smart, Drive Safe
Please remember: updated speed limits are enforceable and meant to keep everyone safe—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Speeding can be costly, both in fines and higher insurance premiums. Let’s all do our part to stay alert, drive with care, and look out for one another on our city streets.
