City Council Selects Seven Draft Maps to Consider for Electoral Districts

After receiving considerable input from the public as well as in-depth deliberations amongst themselves, the City Council selected 7 of the 22 submitted Electoral District Draft Maps for further consideration. The seven include three draft maps produced by National Demographics Corporation, three draft maps created by residents and one draft map submitted by Mayor Henry. You may review these maps at http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/electoral-districts.

The City Council asks the public to provide additional input about the seven selected draft maps. You may do so by attending “City Hall at Your Corner” scheduled for Thursday, August 10, 2017 from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Cathedral City Public Library, Community Meeting Room, 33520 Date Palm Drive; attending the next Public Hearing on Electoral Districts scheduled for Wednesday, August 9, 2017, City Council Meeting, Regular Session, commencing at 6:30 p.m., City Hall, Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero; and/or writing to your council through email. City Council emails are available at http://www.cathedralcity.gov/government/mayor-council.

It is the City Council’s goal to further reduce the number of proposed Electoral Districts Maps to three draft maps by the end of the Public Hearing scheduled for Wednesday, August 9, 2017.

Background:
On March 8, 2017, the City Council approved a Resolution initiating procedures for establishing and implementing “by-district” elections for City Council Members starting in November 2018, which is consistent with Elections Code section 10010. The City Council also approved a Resolution specifying the criteria to guide the establishment of electoral districts. These criteria require the districts to be roughly equal in population, and drawn in a manner that does not result in a denial or abridgement of the right of any citizen to vote on account of race or color.
