City officials and community members attended the International Day of Peace reception organized by the Cathedral City Peace Initiative, S.C.R.A.P. Gallery, and the Cathedral City Senior Center. The event included a special exhibit featuring work by local artists and students and peace doves created by kids in our community.
Mayor Ernesto Gutierrez presented certificates of recognition to Cathedral City Peace Initiative liaisons Bob McKechnie, Karen Riley (Executive Director of the S.C.R.A.P. Gallery) and Sue Townsley, as well as Geoff Corbin and Vic Ide from the Senior Center.
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on Sept. 21. The UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence. Cathedral City is one of 365 International Cities of Peace.
International Cities of Peace is an association of citizens, governments and organizations who have by proclamation, resolution, or by citizen advocacy established their communities as official Cities of Peace. Locally the Cathedral City Peace Initiative is thinking about three kinds of peace:
- We want inner peace for individuals.
- We want peace on the streets of Cathedral City for our residents, visitors, and people passing through.
- We want world peace for all people, places, and things.
