Enhanced Police Enforcement for Illegal Fireworks in Cathedral City Starts Tomorrow

On June 28th at noon, local charities begin selling the “Safe and Sane Fireworks” at various locations throughout Cathedral City.  These are permitted fireworks that do NOT go up in the air and do not explode.  Each package is labeled as “Safe and Sane” by the California State Fire Marshal.

Any firework that is not labeled “Safe and Sane” is considered illegal.  Fines for possessing or firing off illegal fireworks are $1,000 for the first offense.  Property owners will also be fined $1,000 for knowing and allowing illegal fireworks on their property.  A second offense will cost you $3,000, and a third and additional offenses go up $1,000 more ($4,000, $5,000, etc).

Special enforcement patrols will be dispatched throughout the City starting on June 28th through July 4th from 8:00 pm to 2:00 am issuing citations to those who disobey the law and put the community at risk with illegal fireworks.  Beyond a citation, those firing off illegal fireworks will be held responsible for any fire and its resulting damage or injury caused by the illegal fireworks.

To report illegal fireworks happening in your neighborhood, contact the non-emergency police dispatch number at (760) 770-0362 or for emergencies, call 9-1-1.

This 4th of July Holiday – keep it “safe and sane.”
