Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (February 21-24)
Starting today through Sunday, the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (MNCC) returns to Cathedral City’s Big League Dreams Sport Park located at 33700 Date Palm Drive. MNCC is the nation’s largest and most prestigious preseason college softball tourney, featuring more than 25 Top Division I NCAA softball teams.
The lineup of teams includes UCLA, Stanford, Cal-Berkeley, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Oregon, plus many more. Every game of the Mary Nutter Classic will be available live and via replay exclusively on FloSoftball.com via FloPRO subscription, which offers unfettered access to live and archived footage of top club and college softball events, original documentaries on stars of the sport, a library of technique videos and more. Chili Cook-off and Beer Tasting Event (February 23)
Help our seniors “THRIVE” and take part in the “2nd Annual Chili Cook-off and Beer Tasting Event” on Saturday, February 23rd from 11 am to 2 pm at the Cathedral City Senior Center, 37-171 West Buddy Rogers Avenue. For $10, you get to taste the chili from the competing teams and for $7, you get to taste a flight of beers from Bubba’s Bones & Brews’ Domestic and Craft Beers. Agnes Pelton House Museum Day (February 24)
The museum day offers tours of the Agnes Pelton Home built by the transcendental American painter in 1939. The event is located at 68680 F Street in the heart of the fabled neighborhood, the Historic Cathedral City Cove, home of an artists’ colony from the 30’s through the 60’s. This is where Agnes Pelton painted for over twenty years including her notable desert landscape “plein air” works and her abstract master works, and her Transcendental paintings that established her reputation at the mid-century in the art world.
The event includes entrance to the Pelton Sculpture and Meditation gardens, performances of LIVE classical and Mexican Folklorico music, dance, and Spoken Word. Highlights of the event include the showcasing of the Mural Path on Chuperosa Lane of murals by local painters commissioned by the APS, several mosaic murals by Peter Palladino, owner of the Pelton House, and the new Frida Kahlo mosaic by Marni Navarro.
A retrospective of Pelton’s Transcendental paintings will tour in the Spring of 2019 that will begin at the Palm Springs Museum of Art and includes an exhibition at The Whitney Museum of Art.

Cristopher Cichocki’s “Desert Sea” Sculpture (Now through May 5)
Internationally recognized, Coachella Valley artist, Cristopher Cichocki, has created his latest art installation entitled, “Desert Sea,” on the Festival Lawn, 68-600 East Palm Canyon Drive, in Downtown Cathedral City. Viewable now through May 5th, Desert Sea unveils a fusion of materials derived from the Coachella Valley that include Salton Sea barnacles, living aloe vera, along with reclaimed irrigation tubing that once watered the mass of abandoned orchard branches on view within this large-scale artwork. Cichocki’s application of fluorescent color stems from his early explorations of coded street markings related to urban construction, property divisions, and infrastructural development. Here, in the midst of a desert that was once submerged under water, Cichocki shifts the identity of fluorescence and black light into perceptions of deep-sea bioluminescence. In this sense, Desert Sea re-examines the surviving seeds within this ancient desert abyss.
For decades Cichocki has been immersed in the desert of Southern California, responding to the dynamic ecology and water issues of the region. The artist’s environmental interventions reflect upon the timeline spanning from pre-historic oceans to the present-day intersection between humankind, the natural world, and industrial expansion.
