New Year, New Roadway Projects

Happy New Year to all and this is a great time to tell you about the roadway Projects that are under construction and/or design to be completed in early to mid-2022.

Ofelia Bringas Bridge
Let’s jump to the obvious, which is the Ofelia Bringas Memorial Bridge (formerly the Cathedral Canyon Bridge at the Whitewater Channel). This project which started in June of 2020 is scheduled to be completed this upcoming May. If you have driven down Cathedral Canyon lately where the new bridge is under construction, you will notice that the bypass road is gone and you are actually driving on the east half of the new bridge. The opening of the east half of the bridge could not have been timed better as we just had two rain events that generated enough water, that most likely, would have closed the bypass road. With traffic shifted to the completed portion of the bridge, it was a picture of good things to come in that there will be no future road closures during rain events on this stretch of the road.

Landau and McCallum Traffic Signal
We are also initiating design work on an installation of a new traffic signal at the intersection of Landau Blvd. and McCallum Way. This $400,000 Project is funded through SB1 gas tax funds and will take place over a two-year period. Design will be initiated in the next few months and the construction will occur in late 2022. This traffic signal will provide protected pedestrian crossings for residents of the area and the adjacent Mt. San Jacinto High School students and warranted traffic control for turning movements. Staff is also looking at other intersection improvements that may complement this Project.

Century Park Neighborhood Street Rehabilitations
Here is the largest Project that your City Staff is working on for this upcoming spring. This work improves most, if not all the streets within the interior of the Century Park area using $1.4 million in combined SB1 ($1.1 mil.) and Assessment District ($0.3 mil) budgeted funds to rehabilitate the roadways. The rehabilitation will consist of a combination of pavement replacement, application of REAS (Rubberized Asphalt Emulsion Slurry), and/or a combination of both. This work will be done in two phases as the REAS process is temperature-dependent when applied and involves different contractors.

Sarah Street Pavement Rehabilitation
Staff is also working on some short roadway segments that need attention. Sarah Street is a short roadway on the western side of the City, north of Ramon Road near Crossley Road. This roadway section serves a small secluded industrial/commercial area, with several automotive repair shops. This budgeted $320,000 Maintenance of Effort (MOE) General Fund Project will rehabilitate the entire length of Sarah Road and Crossley Road north of Ramon Road and include some curb, corner, and sidewalk work. This project is scheduled for completion in late spring to early summer.

Via De Anza Street Rehabilitation
Another short roadway segment is the Via De Anza Street Rehabilitation which will take place in

the area along Via De Anza from Dinah Shore Drive to Ortega Road, including small portions of Olancha Road and Via Echo. This $385,000 Community Block Grant Development Program funded Project will regrade and repave via De Anza and construct long-needed curb gutter and sidewalk. Portions of Olancha Road and Via Echo will receive the same. This Project is also scheduled for completion this late spring to early summer.

Ramon Road and Corral Road REAS
On a broader stretch of road, Staff is working to make sure that we extend the life of the paving work that was completed on Ramon Road and Corral Road a few years back. Staff will be contracting out for the application of REAS (Rubberized Asphalt Emulsion Slurry) on Ramon Road from Date Palm Drive to Da Val Drive and on Corral Road from Cathedral Canyon to Date Palm Drive. Prior to the application of the REAS, the streets will be cracksealed. The cost of these MOE General Fund Projects as budgeted is $290,000 and $95,000, respectively. This work will be done in the spring as REAS is temperature-dependent on when it can be applied.

Avenida Los Ninos Surface Widening
This Project was added to the budget to widen the east side of Avenida Los Ninos from 750 ft. north of McCallum Way to 30th Avenue. This pavement application will widen the roadway by approximately 17 feet and not include curb, gutter or sidewalk. This budgeted $80,000 Project is funded from MOE General funds and also be completed in the late spring to early summer.

A lot of work is involved in completing the above Projects, so your continued patience and support of City Staff in their efforts to deliver these Projects is appreciated. Once these projects are completed there are more Projects to get completed and I will save these for the next time.

Always travel well and be safe!
