Holiday Safety

Winter is upon us, and as a result, Cathedral City is bustling with holiday activities. The Cathedral City Fire Department offers these simple reminders to help keep your home and celebrations safe and memorable. Even though this is an especially festive time of the year, it also happens to be a very common time for fires in the home. Fires can occur as a result of faulty Christmas trees decorations, candles, and unattended cooking. By taking some simple precautionary steps listed below, everyone can enjoy the lights and festivities in a safe manner.

Fire Safety for Holiday Decorating and Entertaining:
  • First and foremost, it is important is to test your smoke alarms.
  • Ensure decorations are flame resistant or flame retardant, which they should be labeled accordingly if they are.
  • Place Christmas trees as far as possible from fireplaces, furnaces, or any other heat sources. These are not only ignition sources, but they can dry the tree out prematurely, which is why Christmas trees burn so readily.
  • Water live Christmas trees on a regular basis (trees should have fresh green needles) and dispose of them safely within 4 weeks of putting them up.
  • In Cathedral City, Burrtec will be collecting and recycling Christmas trees from single-family residences for 2 weeks following Christmas Day. Trees 6’ and over need to be cut in half for hauling away.
  • Never leave candles burning unattended. Always keep them away from decorations and other items that can burn.
  • Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
  • Replace any string lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
  • Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.
  • Turn off all Christmas string lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Keep children and pets away from lit candles.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stovetop.
Cathedral City wishes everyone a wonderful holiday season and an even happier New Year.
