Community Update By George Crum, Chief of Police
As we plan to celebrate the New Year and leave 2021 behind, I would like to take this opportunity to remind our community that any use of fireworks in any capacity is illegal in Cathedral City. This includes safe and sane fireworks. Rest assured, the Police Department will increase its staffing levels for New Year’s Eve as many of us either celebrate at home or attend celebrations. In past years, we have seen an increase in fireworks during certain holiday celebrations and I encourage community members to notify our communications center if they witness fireworks being deployed. The non-emergency phone number to our communications center is 760-770-0300 Ext. 2.
Police officers and firefighters often find it difficult to locate precise locations where fireworks are being ignited because many are ignited in backyards and by individuals that leave the location prior to the police or fire department's arrival. The police department will remain proactive during the New Year’s Eve holiday weekend. I would ask each community member that reports illegal fireworks to provide our dispatchers with as much information as possible so that we can try to locate the precise location of the illegal activity. I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy New Year!
