Building Safety Month 2022:
“Safety for All; Building Codes in Action”

In May 2022, the City of Cathedral City will participate in the 42nd Annual Building Safety Month, a worldwide campaign presented by the International Code Council, its members and partners to promote building safety. This year’s campaign, “Safety for All: Building Codes in Action,” raises awareness about the importance of building codes in ensuring safety in the spaces in which we live, work, and learn.

Homes and buildings that are built in compliance with building safety codes and the officials who enforce the codes are essential to helping communities become affordable, resilient, and energy and water efficient. Building Safety Month provides homeowners, government officials, and the public with the necessary information and resources to prepare and protect our built environment.

This year’s campaign themes are the following: Week One, May 1-8, Planning for a Safe & Sustainable Tomorrow; Week Two, May 9-15, Exploring Careers in Building Safety; Week Three, May 16-22, Understanding Disaster Mitigation; May 23-31, Creating a Safe & Abundant Water Supply.

Regarding Week One, the U.S. Energy Information Administration projects a 50 percent increase in world energy use by 2050. Here in Cathedral City, we follow the CA Energy Code to make sure all our conditioned buildings are as energy efficient as possible.

Regarding Week Two, Turner & Townsend International Construction Market Survey found that 66 percent of all global regions are experiencing skill shortages in the building industry. Our local ICC Chapter hopes to partner with College of the Desert in growing future Building & Safety team members.

Regarding Week Three, a 2022 FEMA study found that if all new buildings in the U.S. were built to the latest editions of the International Codes, our country could save over $600 billion in damages by 2060. Here in the Coachella Valley, we’re making sure buildings comply with the Codes to resist seismic and wind forces.

Finally, regarding Week Four, according to the World Health Organization, over 2 billion people live in water-stressed countries which are expected to be exacerbated because of climate change and population growth. By following our Plumbing Code and Green Code, water-efficient plumbing fixtures are being installed in existing and new buildings, thus, helping to conserve our most precious commodity.
