Cathedral City Officials Working with College of the Desert to Keep the Automotive Technology Center
For the better part of the past five years, Cathedral City staff and Councilmembers have been working with the College of the Desert to locate a new facility for the COD Automotive Technology Center, known as Roadrunner Motors, in Cathedral City. Roadrunner Motors would bring much-needed high-tech educational opportunities to the area. The City has long supported bringing educational opportunities to Cathedral City residents as a pathway to jobs that can support an improved standard of living.
Late last fall, city staff learned that the future of Roadrunner Motors in Cathedral City might be in jeopardy. College officials indicated that increasing costs for the project might require them to consider other locations for the facility. While understanding the need for the COD Board of Trustees to exercise good financial stewardship of COD resources, the City Council and City staff worked hard to make sure that decisions regarding the Cathedral City site were based on accurate and complete analysis of the data available.
Staff contracted for an independent analysis of the site development costs, Councilmembers interacted with their counterparts on the COD Board and, perhaps most importantly, residents of Cathedral City stepped up to make their voices heard during the public deliberations that followed. Most recently, on Saturday, April 2, residents rallied on the Festival Lawn in front of City Hall to make their support known for locating Roadrunner Motors in Cathedral City as originally promised.
This week, on Wednesday, April 6, the COD Board of Trustees held a special meeting to consider the original Cathedral City site for Roadrunner Motors and other alternative locations. Again, the people of Cathedral City spoke up by sending emails of support, speaking at the meeting in person, and participating in the meeting on Zoom. No decision was made during the April 6 meeting, but COD officials indicated that a decision and vote will likely occur during the regular Board meeting scheduled for April 22. In the meantime, City staff and officials have pledged to continue to work with COD officials to explore ways the City and the College can partner to make this important project a reality.
My thanks go out to the people of Cathedral City who have spoken up on this important topic and I encourage your continued involvement as the COD Board moves toward a final decision. The April 22 COD Board meeting is scheduled for 9:30 am in the Board meeting room on the COD Campus. The meeting agenda will be publicly available a few days prior to the meeting at https://www.collegeofthedesert.edu/
