City Council Acts to Move Forward on Major Projects
The City Council meeting held on February 23, 2022, proved to be significant in moving a number or key projects forward toward ultimate completion. Council acted to award contracts or otherwise act on the following key street projects:
|
- Traffic Signal Upgrades – A design contract amendment was approved to add the intersections of Date Palm/Gerald Ford and Dinah Shore/Cathedral Canyon to the citywide traffic signal upgrades project. This project, which is 100% funded through a federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grant, will provide updated state-of-the-art traffic control equipment at the intersections improving pedestrian safety, turning movements, and traffic flow.
- Pedestrian Safety on Ramon Road – Council also approved a design contract for another HSIP grant-funded project to improve pedestrian safety on Ramon Road in the area of La Paloma to Shifting Sands. The project will provide a demand activated pedestrian signal and median fencing in one of the areas of the city with the highest rate of pedestrian involved accidents and injuries.
- East Palm Canyon Electrical Undergrounding – A design contract was also awarded to develop plans to underground the last remaining overhead electrical lines on the south side of East Palm Canyon. The seven existing poles with overhead lines are located at the far western edge of the city between the city limits with Palm Springs (Golf Club Road) and the Canyon Plaza center. The contract will also include the design for an eventual widening of the existing roadway in that same area.
- Landau Blvd./McCallum Way Traffic Signal – Council also approved a task order for the design of a new traffic signal, and related intersection improvements, at the intersection of Landau Blvd. and McCallum Way. The project will be funded using Senate Bill 1 (gas tax) funds from the State of California. The design will be completed in the upcoming months with construction occurring toward the end of 2022 or early in 2023.
The City Council also acted on the following non-street projects at the same February 23 meeting:
|
- Desert Recreation District Annexation (DRD) – Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the DRD to facilitate Cathedral City annexing into the district. A public vote will be required to authorize the annexation and the necessary funding to support bringing a wide variety of recreational opportunities for all ages, including a community recreation center in our city, to the residents of Cathedral City. The approved MOU will allow the City and the DRD to undertake the steps necessary to move toward a public vote in November of this year. Residents will receive much more information on this topic in the upcoming weeks and months.
- City Council Districts – State and Federal laws require every city that elects councilmembers by districts, to adopt new district boundaries every ten years using new census data. City Council has held four public hearings over the past three months to receive input from the community on all the options for redrawing the district boundaries. Residents also had the opportunity to use an online mapping tool to submit their own map options. After considering seven total draft maps and listening to input from the community, Council provided first reading to an ordinance adopting new Council districts. If the map is approved at second reading on March 9, the new districts will become effective and will be used for the November 2022 Council elections.
