Cathedral City Police Department

It is my pleasure to have this opportunity to discuss the recruiting and hiring of police officers in Cathedral City. Just this past weekend, news articles reported that police departments nationwide are struggling to successfully recruit police officers. Some of the articles provide their opinions on recruiting struggles of police departments, citing police reform, defunding of police, and lacking support from elected officials and members of the general public. In many places, police morale has plunged while retirements and resignations have soared. A June 2021 survey of nearly 200 police departments by the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a
swearing in
nonprofit think tank, shows a startling 45% increase in the retirement rate and a nearly 20% increase in resignations in 2020-21 compared to the previous year.

The exodus of police officers is affecting departments large, small and everything in between. The research group's survey shows that in the largest departments with 500 hundred or more officers, the retirement rate increased by nearly 30%. Overall, new police hiring has dropped 5%. And the timing of these staffing problems couldn't be worse: multiple cities are seeing startling increases in shootings and murders.

I am happy to report that in Cathedral City we are not experiencing the same recruitment challenges of other police departments in California or nationwide. I believe the support we have from our elected officials and residents have played a key role in our recruiting success. It is also true that our city offers a competitive pay and benefits package which allows the department to attract quality police officers. In the past five months, I have hired five police officers which include lateral police officers (switching from one agency to another) and academy trained recruits. The officers listed below have been hired since September 2021.

Officer Laura Ruano was hired 09/07/2021
Officer Peter Shubin was hired 12/27/2021
Officer Rick Osborne was hired 01/27/2022
Officer Mario Valdez was hired 02/07/2022
Officer Garrett Allard was hired 02/07/2022

If you see them out and about serving and protecting, please take an opportunity to say thank you for your service. It will go a long way in making them feel welcomed and appreciated.
