Cathedral City & Desert Recreation District
Summer Aquatic Program

On March 9, 2022, the City Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Desert Recreation District (DRD) and Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD) to operate a summer aquatics program at Cathedral City High School. On June 6, 2022, Cathedral City opened its first Summer Aquatics Program in conjunction with the DRD and PSUSD offering various swimming lessons, aerobics classes, free swim, and more.

Statistics demonstrate that death by drowning in persons under the age of 29 continues to affect certain racial/ethnic groups disproportionately. Although completely preventable, drowning continues to be one of the three leading causes of unintentional injury/death among children. These racial/ethnic disparities persist due to the lack of proper access to these resources in disadvantaged communities and communities of color. Implementing community-based partnerships that promote water safety skills helps reduce these disparities and prevent accidental drownings.

The City is proud to bring the community its first-ever DRD and PSUSD community programming partnership to promote early basic swimming lessons and water safety skills. The Desert Recreation District (DRD) offers a wide variety of fun in the sun and water activities for all ages; their guide can be viewed on their website here. In addition to the various classes and open swim sessions, the City and the DRD will also be hosting two (2) Dive-in Movie Nights on Saturday, June 18, and Saturday, July 16. Doors open at 7:00 PM with the movie starting at sunset. The City is currently working with PSUSD and the DRD to organize food trucks in the parking lot to promote our ‘dinner and a movie’ theme. Please note that food and floatation devices are not allowed in the pool area, so be prepared to come early and enjoy a bite before enjoying a movie under the stars! Please refer to the DRD’s website for real-time updates on these events.

For more than 70 years, the DRD has played a key role in enriching the quality of life for residents and visitors in the Greater Coachella Valley. Their service territory covers over 1,800 square miles and provides recreational services to more than 380,000 residents.

For those interested in joining the summer fun, please head over to the Desert Recreation District (myrecreationdistrict.com) website for more information. Besides the various recreational activities, they are also a great place to find a summer job for those looking to make a difference in our communities.
