New Development Update
Amazon opens in Cathedral City
Amazon has officially opened their doors in Cathedral City. The new 94,000 square foot hub center is the latest addition to Amazon’s progressive e-commerce solution, powering the last mile of the customer order process, to better serve local communities. The initial packaging and sorting will continue to be done at larger fulfillment (first mile) and sort centers (middle mile) located at other site locations.
The existing building, which formerly housed a Sam’s Club, was vacant for over 15 years. The $40 million-plus renovations included a complete redesign of the building to a more modern retail appearance, new parking and landscape areas and street widening and improvements along both Date Palm Drive and Converse Road.
The 24/7 facility will employ 152 employees and utilize 60 delivery vans for local deliveries. This location will also offer a Personal Vehicle Drive Program (PVDP) that allows independent contractors, utilizing their own passenger vehicles, to be their own boss and deliver a limited number of packages during the late afternoon and evening hours. The hub center will be open to customers to pick up and drop off packages. To apply for a position at the new Amazon facility, go to www.Amazon.com/Apply
This isn’t the only exciting new development happening in Cathedral City. The new Tower Market along Date Palm Drive is nearly complete and the 60-unit Veterans Village along Landau Boulevard is under construction as well as other residential projects throughout the City. The cannabis industry continues to develop with new projects expected this summer. Lastly, the Planning Commission recently approved a new The Habit restaurant that is expected to break ground in early 2022 within the Date Palm Plaza (Cardenas) shopping center.
