Facility Management….what is it????

According to the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), facility management is a “profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality, comfort, safety and efficiency of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology.”

Facility Management for government and public sector buildings, too many from the outside, might seem daunting. Generally, laws are written and executed, judgments handed down, interest in real property is recorded, consensus decisions are made for what seems to be in the best interest of the community, and even driver’s licenses and marriage licenses are issued.

Facility Management for government and public sector buildings can include everything from courthouses to hospitals, and from city halls to schoolhouses. They are buildings where critical work is done and that the public relies on for essential services (Police, Fire, Health Care), making comfort, functionality, and safety top priorities. But as any Facilities Manager in the public sector can tell you, they are mostly buildings like any other: filled with complex systems that need careful monitoring and maintenance to function well. They might have many of the same challenges as other buildings, and almost certainly have more stringent regulations than most but there are incredible opportunities to embrace new advances in building management technology, which can also benefit from ongoing upgrades in energy efficiency and which are uniquely positioned to lead the charge toward a more secure, sustainable future.

Facility Management for the City of Cathedral City has made great strides over the years in being the leader of many of these technologies to include being the first city in the valley to construct sophisticated carport solar arrays saving the City nearly a quarter of a million dollars in electric costs annually; room-by-room occupancy sensors to monitor the need for lights and power; advanced computerized air conditioning and lighting systems to optimize comfort and security for the users; computerized moisture sensors to better monitor water usage in our parks; citywide conversion of building lights, traffic signals, park and street lights to LED saving several hundred thousand dollars annually; and, the first city to install EV charging stations in its parking structure, which is no cost to users.

We continue to evolve in our efforts to find the best ways to improve Facility Management primarily through unifying systems, adding smart devices and software layers to optimize insight, efficiency, and performance. Our strategy includes working to integrate and design solutions to gain connectivity between our facilities; deploy an intelligent analytics platform for all equipment, sensors and devices that can harness data and turn it into actionable insights with the goal being centralization, mobile-first control of building systems, pinpoint inefficiencies, recommend solutions, streamline maintenance, and provide opportunities for advanced automation.
