Community Update

Confiscated fireworks

I would like to take this opportunity to recap the fireworks activity our community experienced this summer. In reviewing all calls for service related to fireworks for the month of June 2022, 59 fireworks calls for service were handled by the police department. This was a slight increase from last year as we handled 49 fireworks-related calls for service in June 2021. Our city saw a significant decrease in fireworks-related calls on the 4th of July holiday itself. On July 4, 2022, the police department handled 102 fireworks calls for service compared to 213 fireworks calls for service on July 4, 2021. Between July 1, 2022, and July 5, 2022, the police department received and responded to 163 fireworks calls compared to 156 calls for service in 2021. In making every effort to combat any illegal fireworks activity, I staffed additional officers on weekend nights during the deployment period of July 1st – July 5th.

Police Officers and Firefighters often found it difficult to locate precise locations where fireworks were being ignited because many were ignited in backyards and by individuals that had left the location prior to the police or fire department arrival. The police department remained proactive in the month of June leading up to the Fourth of July weekend having issued a citation to an individual who was in possession of illegal fireworks. During the operational period of July 1st through July 5th, the Police Department made three arrests of individuals in possession of illegal fireworks or igniting illegal fireworks. All the individuals were arrested, booked, and released on citations to appear in court at a later date.

The Fire Department continued its aggressive advertising campaign notifying all residents that all fireworks are illegal in Cathedral City. 20,000 mailers were delivered to residents by the USPS, digital signs and street signs were used to educate the public about illegal fireworks and 20 Sunline bus shelters were outfitted with full-length posters. The Fire Department did not respond to any fireworks-related fires in 2022.
