Community Update
by John Muhr, Fire Chief

ambulance
Cathedral City has provided ambulance transport services to our citizens and visitors for over 30 years. We respond to nearly 7,000 9-1-1 calls annually, most of which are medical in nature. Until recently, Cathedral City ambulances have been staffed with firefighters. These firefighters were sometimes unavailable for fires when they were either at the hospital or on their way to a call. In fact, 49% of the time, one of our ambulances was unavailable, and 27% of the time both ambulances were unavailable.

To help increase the availability of firefighters for firefighting and rescue operations, our City Council approved the Fire Department to begin hiring people for a new position in the department called Ambulance Operators. Ambulance operators respond on the ambulance to calls for medical emergencies but are not firefighters. It is our plan that we will move all the firefighters over to the fire engines in 2023. This will keep our firefighters available to respond to other emergencies more of the time

In June 2020, Cathedral City Council voted to order two brand new Ford Ambulances. Additionally, in September this year, we were approved to add a third new ambulance to our fleet at Fire Station #2. While our fire engines and our fire truck are staffed with paramedic firefighters who provide advanced lifesaving treatment upon their arrival, this added ambulance will allow our customers to experience shorter wait times to be transported to the hospital. This will also allow critical patients to be transferred to emergency room physicians and staff quicker and will result in better outcomes for recovery.

As our community continues to grow, we seek opportunities to creatively meet the community’s needs. With the support of our City Council, residents, and visitors, we are proud to answer the call of duty for you.
