The Bringas Bridge

Over the years, we have discussed the community- and quality of life-enhancing initiatives your Economic Development Department leads or supports. In this Community Update, the Economic Development Department is excited to share the significant contribution the Public Arts Commission recently made to the Cathedral City community.

On Oct. 6, 2022, Mayor Ernesto Gutierrez, Mayor Pro Tem Lamb, and Councilmembers Carnevale, Ross, and Gregory celebrated the Ofelia Bringas Bridge. The Bringas Bridge is the City’s newest $22M infrastructure improvement located along Cathedral Canyon Drive spanning the Whitewater Wash. As a part of the bridge construction, 20-street facing pilasters were designed to hold art, art designed to tell a story.

On March 27, 2020, the City Council voted to name this Cathedral Canyon Bridge after the late Ofelia Bringas. Ms. Bringas was a Cathedral City-based youth counselor who devoted her entire career bridging available resources with those in need. Ms. Bringas was the pillar of support to thousands of families in the Coachella Valley struggling with childcare, poverty, food scarcity, and language barriers. Her focus was always on the success of the children enrolled in educational and recreational programs she directed. Ms. Brings, also known as “Miss B” to the community, enticed the children with a multitude of activities while simultaneously instilling proper values, enhancing their self-esteem, and helping them overcome emotional inhibitions to become productive adults.

The Public Arts Commission, after working closely with the Bringas Family over several years, brought to life the legacy and contributions of Ofelia Bringas to the Cathedral City community through the creation of sixteen themes. These themes include:

1. Education
9. Embraced by her community
2. Cathedral City Boys and Girls Club
10. Fundraising
3. Love of animals and children
11. The legendary avocado green station wagon transporting children
4. Overcoming language barriers
12. Miss Bee
5. Hispanic American background
13. Dia de los Muertos celebration
6. Food insecurity
14. Instilling hope and opportunity within her children
7. Leader and mentor
15. War on poverty
8. All children benefited from her
16. No tolerance for violence

The Public Arts Commission encourages you to tour the bridge, enjoy the City of Cathedral City’s newest and largest art installation, and learn a little more about a community pillar’s three decades of care and concern that continues to impact so many positively.
