Update on the City’s Paving Reconstruction Projects

Last month, we started construction on four paving projects in the City that represents close to $2.0 million of additional expenditures on our roadways. Work is progressing quickly, and the following is an update on the progress of these projects.

Century Park Neighborhood Street Project
This Project started a few weeks back with concrete ADA corner ramp replacements, and curb and gutter replacements. These have been completed. Now, we are midway through the paving portion of the Project. This paving work will halt for a few days in order for the forecasted rain and thunderstorm to pass the area. Once the rain storm passes, paving operations will resume in the area. Once the paving operations are completed, the stop bars, crosswalks, and minimal striping in the area will be applied. All the work in this area should be completed within two weeks. A map of the streets where work is continuing is shown below.

Sarah Street Pavement Rehabilitation
The paving work for Sarah Street Project was started this past Wednesday. The concrete work, e.g. driveways, curbs and gutter were completed at the beginning of last week. Remarkably, and motivated by the upcoming weather conditions, the contractor completed the paving portion of the work in one day! That was over 1,400 tons of asphalt placed in this light industrial/commercial area with 70 truck loads of hot asphalt delivered. The traffic loop replacement at the Crossley Road/Ramon Road intersection will be completed early tomorrow morning (4:00 am) and the minimal striping and stop bars will be applied early next week, weather permitting. The map below shows the location of the work.

Avenida Los Ninos Surface Widening and Via De Anza Street Rehabilitation Projects
These Projects involve the widening of half the streets either to provide an added vehicle lane and/or add improvements such as curb, gutter, and sidewalk.

The Avenida Los Ninos Project
The Avenida Los Ninos Project will be starting tomorrow. The contractor will proceed with grinding operations tomorrow and will continue until the forecasted rain makes it too difficult to proceed. Depending on how the contractor completes completed tomorrow, the contractor may have to continue the grinding operations on Monday. Once the contractor completes the grinding operations next week, the contractor will immediately proceed with the paving portion of the Project, widening the street by 17 feet on the east side from north of McCallum Way to 30th Avenue. This Project should be completed by the end of next week. The Project location is shown below.

The Via De Anza Rehabilitation Project Phase 1
This very involved Project, just north of Dinah Shore Drive on Via De Anza, is in the final stages of completion. This Project required the removal of a significant amount of landscaping, hardscaping, walls and accessories that had been placed in the right of way prior to the City’s incorporation and the following years. The completed improvements included the installation of asphalt paving on the west half of the street with full half street width paving, driveways, curb and gutter and sidewalk. There are few more improvements that the contractor has left to complete off the roadway and within the right of way behind the new sidewalk. Once the materials necessary to complete this final work are delivered (projected at a month out), the contractor will complete the work and the City can proceed to close out the Project. A map of the improvement area is shown below.

Note: The City Engineering Staff is already working on the Project design for the portions that involve the east side of the street, Via De Anza Phase 2, which will be completed next year.

Summary
I have commented on the upcoming thunderstorm that is forecasted for tomorrow and over the upcoming weekend. This means that the streets will be wet and there may be localized flooding during and after the rain. The current areas where flooding may close and reduce the roadway widths are as follows:
  • Varner Road just north of Edom Hill Road
  • Date Palm Drive and Los Gatos
  • Vista Chino at the Whitewater River Crossing
Please note that we are working on solutions to the above storm-challenged locations with the first two areas in preliminary culvert design stages and the latter, the future Vista Chino Bridge, in the 70% design stage (the City of Palm Springs is the lead agency on this Project). Please slow down and be aware of the roadway conditions during and after this storm.

I will also point out that the Cathedral Canyon Drive crossing at the Whitewater River Channel is not on the above list anymore due to the opening of the Ofelia Bringas Memorial Bridge. With the new Bridge, the Cathedral Canyon Drive crossing at the Whitewater River Channel is no longer a factor when it rains.

Reminder: The Ofelia Bringas Memorial Bridge dedication ceremony, with Congressmembers Raul Ruiz and Michael Levin scheduled to be in attendance, will be on Thursday morning October 6th at 10:00 a.m. on the southeast side of the Bridge. All are invited to come and watch the dedication.
