Thanksgiving

If you are anything like Cathedral City’s Firefighters, you enjoy food and cooking. Our Firefighters work a 48-hour shift, and definitely, enjoy their Thanksgiving meal in between running emergency calls.

This is a great time of the year to focus not only on the things we need to be thankful for but also staying fire safe, particularly in the kitchen. It is important, especially when there’s a lot of activity in our homes and we can get distracted by family, friends, and pets.

As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that family feast, remember to follow a few simple safety tips that can keep your family safe from an unintentional fire. Listed below are the top 10 Holiday Safety Tips for a successful Thanksgiving.

Top 10 safety tips
  • First of all, the fire department discourages deep frying turkeys. Never deep fry a whole turkey indoors.
  • Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking so that you can keep an eye on the food.
  • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. If you must leave, make sure someone is there to supervise.
  • Always utilize a timer when using the oven. It is easy to become preoccupied and forget.
  • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy, or coffee can cause serious burns.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of a child and keep knives covered when carrying them.
  • Be sure electric cords from small appliances are clear of the path of travel to avoid tripping or spill hazards.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high or in a locked cabinet.
  • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.
  • Make sure your smoke alarms are working and test them by pushing the test button.
Thanksgiving fire facts
  • Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires with more than three times the daily average for such incidents. Christmas Day and Christmas Eve ranked second and third, with both having nearly twice the daily average.
  • In 2019, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,400 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving, the peak day for such fires.
  • Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.
  • Cooking caused nearly half (49 percent) of all reported home fires and more than two of every five (42 percent) home fire injuries. It is also the second leading cause of home fire deaths (20 percent) in 2015-2019.
Please follow these tips and enjoy another wonderful Thanksgiving. Although this has been a challenging year, we still have much to be thankful for. As always, your Fire Department is here as your advocate. Call on us whenever you’re in need. For emergencies, dial 9-1-1.
