Community Update

Strategic Planning Effort Underway

For the past three months, the City Council and staff have been working on a long-range strategic plan to guide Cathedral City into the future. The consulting group MIG was engaged by the Council to help facilitate the strategic planning effort. In December MIG staff interviewed all the City Councilmembers to get a better understanding of their vision and goals for the future and they also facilitated a workshop with city staff leadership to get their vision as well. But that was just the beginning of the data collection part of the project. It was important to get input from the residents of Cathedral City as well. To that end, a professional survey research firm, FM3, conducted a statistically valid survey of Cathedral City residents in early January of this year. A summary of the results of the survey can be seen at https://www.discovercathedralcity.com/community-survey-released-as-part-of-cathedral-citys-five-year-strategic-planning-process/

All the data gathered through the Council interviews, staff workshop and community survey were then compiled and became the starting point for the Strategic Planning workshop held on January 28, 2023. MIG facilitated the meeting, the purpose of which was to introduce city leadership to the Strategic Planning process, and to discuss their shared values, vision, goals, and strategic directions to be considered in developing a five-year strategic plan. All five members of the City Council, city department directors, and representative staff across all departments participated in the all-day interactive workshop.

Mayor Lamb called the meeting to order and introduced Esmeralda García who served as the meeting facilitator. Ms. García led the group with self-introductions, reviewed the workshop objectives, and provided an overview of the strategic planning process. She introduced Richard Bernard who presented findings from the community survey conducted by his survey research firm FM3. After he addressed questions, Ms. García launched the workshop activities.

The City Council and city staff were assigned to cross-functional teams and sat in these smaller groups. The groups each addressed questions and prompts focused on a series of topics related to the Strategic Plan. These included Values, Vision, Goals, and Strategic Priorities. Each group shared the results of its discussion with the entire group.

The next steps in the strategic planning process will include a follow-up workshop with departmental staff and a second study session with the full City Council, tentatively scheduled for March 22. The meeting will be open to the public.

The result of all this activity will be a plan to move Cathedral City into the future, reflective of the needs and wants of the entire community. I’ll provide a further update on the strategic plan as it moves through the Council review and approval processes.
