Construction Activity – Year in Review

2022 was another banner year for development in Cathedral City with construction starting on several major commercial and residential projects, the completion of many others, new businesses coming to Cathedral City, and continued green investment through the City’s solar program, with 920 residential solar permits issued in 2022.

Several major chains selected Cathedral City to build their new locations including the recently opened The Habit, Quick Quack carwash, and Denny’s. Existing buildings were also renovated to make way for national retailers, restaurants, and banks including Advance Auto Parts, Wingstop, and Mechanics Banks. Development also flourished in the City’s Downtown with the opening of the Luchador Brewing Company, Monster Shakes, Desert Thai, Drop By Office, and the City’s very own Cathedral City Community Amphitheater, which hosted a number of events in 2022, and many more planned for 2023.

Residential development flourished with the completion of the new 60-unit Veterans Village project, which will provide much-needed housing for veterans with onsite supportive services, the full renovation of the Cathedral Palms senior apartments and construction of a new community center, and the construction of new homes within the existing Campanile and Rio Del Sol communities.

Other notable items included the opening of the Paloma resort and restaurant, approval of the Cathedral Cove Center, a 13-acre mixed-use center just south of the Agua Caliente Cathedral City casino, Kroger fuel station, and the 48-unit Canyon Villas and 17-unit Newport 17 apartment projects, and the completion of several new cannabis facilities.

Finally, construction valuation neared $70 million this year, which represents the amount of development and construction investment made in the City and shows strong development interest, which we expect to continue into 2023.
