Community Update
by Michael Contreras - Fire Chief

When it’s cold outside, we turn to home furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters to make life comfortable. However, each of these methods to warm your home comes with risks.

The US Fire Administration’s data collection tells us that more home fires occur in winter than in any season. One in every seven home fires and one in every five home fire deaths involve heating equipment. The 2020 national estimates for residential building heating fires and losses show that there were:
  • 33,000 fires.
  • 125 deaths.
  • 575 injuries.
  • $378,600,000 in dollar loss.
Cathedral City has had no fire fatalities during our colder months this season (10/01/22 through 2/01/23).

From the spread of fire to carbon monoxide poisoning, education about fire safety is the key to risk reduction. Here are some tips to help you keep your family and property safe from heating fires.
THE DO'S:
  • Have furnaces serviced before winter arrives to ensure it is working properly.
  • Make sure outside vents for your furnace, stove, fireplace, and gas dryer are clear of debris.
  • Keep anything that can burn at least three feet from any heat source.
  • Plug only one heat-producing appliance (like a space heater) into an electrical outlet at a time.
  • Install and maintain smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms are especially important during a loss of power when people may use alternate forms of heating equipment, portable generators, and candles.
  • Use flashlights for emergency lighting and stock up on batteries.
  • Have a qualified repair company or licensed electrician inspect water-damaged appliances and home wiring after a flood.
  • Portable generators are useful during storms, but if not used safely, they can cause injury and death. Keep portable generators outside, away from windows, and as far away as possible from your home.
  • When connecting appliances to generators, use grounded, heavy-duty extension cords to prevent electrical fires.
  • Install and test carbon monoxide alarms at least once a month.

THE DON'T'S:
  • Never use an oven or stovetop to heat your home.
  • Never use candles for emergency lighting. Many things in your home can catch fire if they are too close to a candle's flame.
  • Make sure your portable heater has a solid base, and base feet are not loose.
  • Never fuel your generator while it is running.
  • Don’t use a generator in a wet area.
