City Council Looks Forward to Packed Agendas

Cathedral City continues to be the place to be as we look ahead to the late summer and fall seasons. As a result, your City Council will be busy with the important work of governing our City. Let’s take a look at some of the issues the Council will be hearing in the upcoming weeks and months:
  1. Dream Homes Park – The design of this new park, funded through a State Parks grant of about $8.5 million is nearing completion. Council will review the final design later this month and, after a public bid process, will likely award a construction contract by the end of 2023. A neighborhood meeting to review the final design will be held at the Agua Caliente school at 5:00 pm.
  2. Downtown Dog Park – A design contract will be considered for the Downtown Dog Park, likely in September. The completion of a formal design will help identify construction costs so that funding opportunities can then be explored. The park is proposed for a City-owned parcel just west of the Fire Station on Buddy Rogers near the Agua Caliente Casino.
  3. Replacement Motorcycles for the Police Motors Unit – Council will consider the purchase of replacement motorcycles for the Police Motors Unit. Officers have been trained and the Motors Unit will launch on Monday, so follow the speed limits around town.
  4. Strategic Plan – Council will receive an update on the progress made toward achieving the goals and objectives in the Strategic Plan. You can review the plan here: https://www.discovercathedralcity.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/StrategicPlan-FINAL.pdf
  5. Street Slurry Seal Contract – Council will consider a contract to provide a protective slurry seal on selected arterial and neighborhood streets around the City. Slurry seal is best applied in the fall when temperatures are moderate.
  6. Los Gatos Drainage – Council will consider a task order for the design of drainage improvements at Date Palm and Los Gatos, the location of frequent flooding events.
  7. Fall Special Events Preview – Council will receive a presentation on the fall special events calendar. You can get a sneak preview here: https://www.discovercathedralcity.com/save-the-date-mark-your-calendars-for-cathedral-citys-2023-fall-events-season/
  8. Development Impact Fees – Council will consider adopting updated Development Impact Fees (DIF) which were last updated in 2006. DIF are fees charged to new development to offset the cost of developing public infrastructure necessary to serve new development. Without DIF the costs of new facilities needed would have to be borne by existing taxpayers.
  9. Grants to Non-Profit Service Providers – The adopted City Budget includes funding for grants to non-profit organizations that serve Cathedral City residents. Funding for non-profits helps our residents with needed social services and non-profits can often provide services more efficiently and effectively than the City could. Council will consider the grant awards in September or early October.
These and many more items will be considered by the City Council in the upcoming months. You can review Council agendas for each meeting here: http://cathedralcityca.iqm2.com/Citizens/
