It Takes a Village
Every Person in Cathedral City is Part of Storm Clean-Up

As I am sure you are aware by now, flooding caused by Tropical Storm Hilary inundated a Cathedral City neighborhood with mud and water on August 20, 2023. What you may not know is how every person in our City participated in the massive clean-up required after the flood.
  1. Neighbor Helping Neighbor – Residents of the affected neighborhood in the Horizon Road area of Panorama rose to the occasion and helped one another in amazing ways. They helped each other with mud and debris removal, providing meals and supplies needed for their neighbors and volunteers, providing physical and emotional support to each other, and lifting each other up in countless other ways.
  2. Volunteers – Scores of volunteers from across our city, the Coachella Valley, and elsewhere in the region came to the aid of the neighborhood. Volunteers contributed manual labor necessary to remove the mud and debris, they provided gift cards, meals, hotel vouchers, water, tools, supplies, and many other resources needed by the people affected by the storm.
  3. City Crews and Contractors – Cathedral City employees and contractors operated the heavy equipment required to remove the mud, provided dumpsters and removed debris (more than 320 tons so far), cleared the streets and rights of way, and coordinated the overall City clean-up response.
  4. City Council – The City Council of Cathedral City performed the vital role of providing the resources necessary to facilitate the clean-up. To date, they have provided more than $1 million dollars in funding for the initial and continuing clean-up effort and, additionally, at their last meeting allocated more than $4 million dollars to pay a contractor to haul away and properly dispose of the mounds of dirt and mud removed from the neighborhood. They also continue to play a crucial role in advocating to county, state, and federal officials for critically needed relief funding from those levels of government
  5. Every Resident of Cathedral City – All property owners pay taxes, and all residents who shop in our City pay sales taxes so everyone in Cathedral City has some of their tax dollars in the funding that is supporting the clean-up effort. This comes at another cost to our residents in that other street projects that were going to be done this year or even next year may have to be delayed to pay for the clean-up and repairs required after the storm.
This is the way government is supposed to work – collectively we address problems that are too hard or too costly for individuals to address on their own. The work is not done yet, but the people of Cathedral City have demonstrated that they are up to the task and the work will continue.
