Did you feel it?
Are you prepared to ride out an earthquake?

As residents living in Southern California, and particularly here in the Coachella Valley, we know that there is a strong likelihood that we will experience earthquakes in our lifetime. Thankfully, most of the time the rumbling and shaking experienced is mild. I’ve only been here in the Valley for nine months and I’ve already experienced an earthquake. However, while we are aware of these risks, how often do we practice what we should do if the ‘big one’ hits or look at our disaster supplies? It is very easy to get complacent because we’re all busy and the daily priorities often get in the way.

Today, communities across the country, including Cathedral City, participated in the Great California ShakeOut. The ShakeOut is an annual event to remind residents and businesses to practice how to prepare for, survive, and recover from an earthquake. At City Hall, our staff practiced and discussed what we would do if an earthquake hit while we were at work. The Cathedral City Police Department and the City’s facilities division conducted a power outage test to ensure our backup generators went on and our dispatch center performed without uninterrupted. Over the weekend, The Cathedral City Fire Department trained over 100 high school students in emergency response.

Why not take some time today to review these seven steps to better prepare you and your family or your workplace?
