As 2023 is coming to an end, it’s a great time to reflect on the past year. For Cathedral City, we adopted a five-year strategic plan to implement the City Council’s goals, made significant investments in critical road improvements, awarded a contract for the construction of the new Dream Homes Park, and had record attendance at our signature events such as the Taste of Jalisco and the Cathedral City International Hot Air Balloon Festival to name just a few successes.
Our city also faced one critical challenge, the aftermath of Tropical Storm Hilary. Tropical Storm Hilary created localized flooding that impacted several neighborhoods and brought mud and debris from miles away into the city, inundating the Horizon neighborhood with several feet of mud that came into homes, and local businesses and city streets. The financial impact on the City was great, with over $6 million in direct expenditures for cleanup and debris removal efforts and millions in additional roadway repairs anticipated. For the individual homeowners and businesses impacted, the task of digging out or repairing flooded properties was daunting, but that is where the community stepped in. Never in my over thirty years of government service have I seen such an overwhelming community response to residents in need. The support was across all spectrums – mutual aid from our governmental and non-governmental partners, direct assistance, home and yard mud cleanouts for the individuals and businesses in the Horizon neighborhood, discounts, feeding, advocacy, referrals, donations, mental health support, help with recovery, and so much more.
On behalf of the City Council and City Manager McClendon, we offer our sincerest thanks and appreciation to all the agencies and individuals who came to the aid of our community. While this list represents many, there are most certainly others who provided help in their own individual ways, and we offer our thanks to them as well.

Wishing you all the best of the holiday season and the new year!
