10 Weeks on the Job Perspectives from the New Assistant City Manager
Greetings and Happy Spring! Although, as I’m quickly learning as one of the newest residents of the Coachella Valley, spring is almost done, and summer is upon us!
|
As your new Assistant City Manager, I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself and share a bit about what I have been up to during my first ten weeks on the job.
|
First, I thought I would answer the question, what is an Assistant City Manager, or for that matter, what is a City Manager? Cathedral City is a Council-Manager form of government, the most popular structure of government in the United States. Residents elect a governing body, the City Council, which serves as the voice of the community and adopts legislation and sets policy. The City Council hires a chief executive officer, the City Manager, to carry out the City Council’s policies and oversee the City’s day-to-day operations. As the Assistant City Manager, I work with the City Manager to share some of the oversight of the City’s operations and help execute the Council’s direction.
|
For Cathedral City, I oversee the Financial Services, Public Works, Development Services, Information Technology, and Economic Development departments. During these first months, I have been actively participating with the City Manager, City Council, and executive team as we get closer to finalizing the five-year strategic plan. Charlie McClendon, the City Manager, shared information on the strategic plan in the last newsletter and the plan will be presented to the City Council at the April 12 Council meeting for their consideration and approval. The key initiatives that I am working on include:
|
- developing and implementing systems and practices to facilitate development in the City that is predictable, facilitative, and timely;
- implementing technology solutions to make more government services available online and make internal and external processes more streamlined;
- serving as the staff liaison to the Public Arts Commission; and
- continuing my education of the organization and community so I can better serve the community’s needs.
I am grateful for the warm welcome I have received from staff, the City Council, and our residents and look forward to becoming more actively involved in the community.
