City Council Committed to Planning Cathedral City’s Future

“If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll end up somewhere else.” Yogi Berra

Your City Council is committed to knowing where we are going as a city, a community, and an organization. Getting there requires planning and being intentional in all we do to make sure we arrive.

While planning for the future has always been a priority for the City Council, recently their focus has sharpened through the following efforts:
  1. Development and adoption of a five-year strategic plan for Cathedral City. This month's long effort included a community survey and several public study session meetings including an all-day planning session on Saturday, January 28, 2023. The Strategic Plan can be viewed here:
https://www.discovercathedralcity.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/StrategicPlan-FINAL.pdf. The plan will guide the city as we move into the future and will serve as a roadmap for future budget and resource allocation decisions.
  2. Development and adoption of the biennial budget for Fiscal Years 23/24 and 24/25. The budget is a planning document and allocates funds to implement the priorities identified by the City Council. The budget for the next two-year period was approved by the Council on May 24, 2023, and can be viewed here: https://www.cathedralcity.gov/home/showdocument?id=11220
  3. Development and adoption of the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) and Parks Improvement Plan. The CIP and Parks Improvement Plans were adopted as part of the recently approved biennial budget document. The Parks Improvement Plan provides funding for the following projects over the next two budget years:
    1. Century Park - Repair and renew walking path, add crosswalk and ADA ramps in Century Park. Upgrade the baseball field, install new water splash pad, and enhance security features.
    2. Dennis Keat Soccer Park - Install crosswalk, ADA ramps, and parking lot at the Dennis Keat Soccer Park. Renovate and repair pedestrian lighting for fitness walking path.
    3. Downtown Dog Park - Build a park which has both large and small dog sections, a parking lot, restrooms, and four pickleball courts.
    4. Ocotillo Park - Install crosswalk and ADA ramps in Ocotillo Park. Install outfield fence for baseball field and upgrade mechanics of splash pad to recycle the water.
    5. Panorama Park - Install crosswalk and ADA ramps in Panorama Park. Install lighting for basketball court and baseball field, enhance security features, and upgrade splash pad area.
    6. Town Square Park and Fountain of Life - Install a new splash pad for recreation as the Fountain of Life art installation is no longer utilized as for recreation.
    7. Included in the five-year Capital Improvement Plan are the following street projects:
      • Edom Hill Truck Climbing Lane
      • Ramon Road Bridge and Roadway Widening
      • East Palm Canyon Bike Lane
      • Cathedral Canyon Bike Lane and Sidewalk
      • Date Palm Drive East Bike Lane and Sidewalk
      • Los Gatos Road Drainage at Date Palm Drive

  4. Development of Master Plans. These plans will determine needs and guide funding decisions in the following areas:
    • Information Technology Master Plan
    • Pavement Management Plan
    • Facilities Master Plan
    • Entryway, Medians, and Lighting Master Plan
Arriving at our desired future won’t happen by accident. It requires planning and commitment to following through on those plans. The City Council and staff of Cathedral City are committed to making sure that arriving at our destination is the guiding priority in everything we do.
