Project Updates and Information That Will Interest You

Ofelia Bringas Bridge
The Ofelia Bringas Memorial Bridge (formerly the Cathedral Canyon Bridge at the Whitewater Channel). This Project, which started in June of 2020, is scheduled to be completed by the contractor (Ames Construction, Inc.) on May 13, 2022. Right now, this date seems achievable as there have not been any hiccups in the final days of construction that would extend this date. After the bridge is completed by the contractor and they move off, the Public Arts Commission will have its artists move in and complete complimentary artwork on the interior bridge pilasters. The official dedication of the Bridge will be scheduled in June. Check the www.DiscoverCathedralCity.com website for information and details regarding the dedication ceremony.

Century Park Neighborhood Street Rehabilitations
To the neighbors in the immediate Century Park area, we are still on target to recondition these neighborhood streets this spring. Engineering Staff has been diligently preparing for the work on these streets that will encompass a combination of Rubberized Emulsion Aggregate Slurry (REAS) application on some streets and full reconstruction on others. There are also locations where the curb and gutter will be repaired and corner ramps replaced. In addition, residents that are within Assessment District 2000-1 (AD 2000-1) west of Santoro Drive, will receive REAS on their streets. On the areas that will receive a REAS application, contractor crews will move in prior to REAS and crack seal the streets. All the residents on the streets that are affected by the upcoming work will be notified prior to construction.

Ramon Road and Corral Road REAS
We are still on schedule to get this work done this spring. On the same contract as the Century Park Neighborhood REAS, the contractor will be applying REAS on Ramon Road from Date Palm Drive to Da Val Drive and on Corral Road from Cathedral Canyon to Date Palm Drive. Again, prior to the application of the REAS, the streets will be crack sealed.

Sarah Street Pavement Rehabilitation and Avenida Los Ninos Surface Widening
These pavement rehabilitation Projects are still on schedule and will be completed with the same contractor that will be performing full reconstruction work on specified streets within the Century Park area. Sarah Street is a short roadway segment on the western side of the City, north of Ramon Road near Crossley Road and Avenida Los Ninos will be widened to the east (no curb and gutter) from 750 ft. north of McCallum Way to 30th Avenue. Again, all the businesses and residents, respectively, on the streets that are affected by the upcoming work will be notified prior to construction.

Via De Anza Street Rehabilitation
The Via De Anza Rehabilitation Project will be limited this year as the Coachella Valley Water District (CVWD) notified city staff that they would like to replace the water lines in this area. Their work should take place within a year. In the meantime, Engineering Staff has designed a smaller Project that will get the street reconstruction in the area started without interfering with CVWD’s proposed water line improvements. The redesign will involve improving the west side of Via De Anza from Dinah Shore to Olancha Road with curb gutter, sidewalk, and minimal repaving. This Project will involve significant communication with the residents on this section of street as there are a few private improvements that have been constructed within the street right of way over many years that will need to be modified, removed, and/or reconstructed. City Staff and Consultants will be reaching out to each resident affected by the impending construction work to explain and coordinate the required improvements necessary to complete the work.

Work by Frontier within City Streets/Right of Way and Other Rights of Way
Many of our residents have been calling into City Staff regarding temporary asphalt patches that have cropped up all over the City. These patches are in the streets, parkways, sidewalks, and other locations. These patches are the result of Frontier Communications expanding its broadband service and installing new fiber optic cable, either under the streets and parkways or on existing poles. Working between the hours of 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, these excavation locations are backfilled at the end of the day and topped with temporary asphalt. The temporary asphalt will be removed within a few weeks and restoration of the permanent surface to prior or better standards will be completed per City standards. This restoration includes, and is not limited to asphalt, sidewalk, curb gutter, or landscaping. I have included Frontier’s Construction Alert letter, in English and Spanish, as part of this Community Update for your additional information.

HAWK Crosswalks
hawk-cw
Yes, we already have two HAWK Crosswalks along Dinah Shore Drive, and we will be adding two more in the next two years. The HAWK, short for High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk, are special types of crosswalk beacons used to warn and control motorists at marked unsignalized crosswalks that assist pedestrians crossing a busy street. Along Dinah Shore at Via De Anza and at Linda Way, respectively, these two HAWK Crosswalks have protected pedestrians crossing Dinah Shore for the past three years.

In the latest of successful grant awards, we will be installing a HAWK Crosswalk on Ramon Road, in the area of Avenida La Palma/Avenida La Gaviota. This is the result of receiving a 100% funded Grant from the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Cycle 10 in the amount of $776,600 for the design and installation of a HAWK Crosswalk and median fencing. The funding for this design work has already been authorized.

The other HAWK Crosswalk will be installed along Cathedral Canyon south of Dinah Shore Drive at Calle Trujillo. This HAWK Crosswalk is a part of the bigger Downtown Cathedral City Connectors Project which will provide sidewalks, bike lanes, and multi-use trails at various locations along Cathedral Canyon, Date Palm Drive, and East Palm Canyon as part of the ATP Cycle 5 and the FY 19/20 SB 821 Grants awarded in 2020. The overall combined Grant award was over $4.3 million for this Project.

For our residents that want a refresher on the HAWK Crosswalk operation, I have included several web links that provide interesting and fun videos on how these HAWK Crosswalks operate. Many of these videos are from other States, so you may encounter these on your travels across our great nation. Please take the time to watch these videos so that you, as a pedestrian, bicyclist, and/or motorist, will know what to do when approaching this type of crosswalk.
