Community Update by Michael Contreras, Cathedral City Fire Chief
Fireworks of any type (even Safe and Sane) are illegal in Cathedral City. In addition to fines and possible jail time for possessing and igniting fireworks, injuries from fireworks can last a lifetime.
Each July 4th, thousands of people, most often children and teens, are injured while using consumer fireworks. Despite the dangers of fireworks, few people understand the associated risks - devastating burns, other injuries, fires, and even death.
Fireworks also cause emotional injuries to those afflicted with PTSD, and to animals.
FACTS:
- More than 19,500 reported fires are started by fireworks annually.
- Burns account for 44% of the 9,100 injuries treated in ER’s seen in the month of July 4.
- Half of all fireworks injuries seen at ER’s were extremities (hand, finger, or leg). 1/3 were to the eye or other parts of the head.
- Children ages 10 – 14 had the highest rate of fireworks injuries, with more than 36% of the victims of fireworks injuries under age 15.
- Sparklers account for roughly ¼ of ER fireworks injuries. [i]
Your Cathedral City Firefighters have a few tips to help get you into the patriotic spirit, WITHOUT fireworks:
- Use glow sticks. They glow in the dark and are a safe alternative to a sparkler. Little ones love them, and they’re safe for kids of all ages.
- Get loud and proud! Noise makers are sure to liven a party, and are readily available at party supply stores, and the big box chains. Throw a craft party and make your own. Here’s just one website with ideas and instructions to help you get started: https://theholidazecraze.com/10-do-it-yourself-party-noisemakers-for-new-years/.
- Throw a birthday party for the USA – don’t forget the cake!
- Attend a local professional fireworks show in our nearby area.
However you celebrate, LEAVE THE FIREWORKS OUT.
